A good insult is funny and to the point, normally as a reply to a given insult.

lolmost. bo maybe u should really start reading posts. very carefully. and maybe u should start getting concrete, consistent definitions before u say things. cos what u say is about as inconsistent as it gets.

Sorry, I have been the target of some really great insults. I remember half of a situation where I was angry as hell on a cheater on one of the servers and I said something about him beeing a poor kid with no friends living in his mothers cellar and blabla. I dont remember what he answered but somehow he managed to turn the whole thing around on me instead and it was so great I just had to give him the point and leave it alone.

Your post is alive and well back on page 5. Tongue

Also, let's agree to disagree here - i never saw, nor i ever will see insulting someone as a form of entertainment. Insults, for me, are a tool which i use to show my discontent and anger at a person. As i understand it, this is also the viewpoint of my fellow staff members. So, like it or not, guys, try NOT to insult each other in public. Tongue

Yaknow, I think you have seen insulting as a form of entertainment. It's in music, movies, books... Standup comedy is a good example.. Ever saw and laughed at Southpark? The movie Team America?

...or the entire Swedish assortment of TV shows? Embarrassing, insulting, unhappiness - every second on atleast some channel.

Here's the thing though; mostly for this reason I don't even own a TV.

Thought it was kind of funny comparing gaming forums to standup comedy (and indirectly reality shows and other shit). You may want this but hell...

Anyway just a quick share of thoughts on that topic. I left the rest of the discussion because it is pointless and we HAVE to agree to disagree as Mad said. We have to, because our definitions on a lot of things (especially terms like "flaming") are waaay off eachothers. Mainly yours, Bo, are completely different from almost everything and everyone I've seen being online since '97, but for the very reason that nobody can prove the other "wrong" and there is no "ultime link of click-me-for-the-truth" we can't settle this.

You think there is "good flaming". I think if it was "good", it wasn't "flaming", and if it was good AND flaming then it was two separate things and the flaming part was still not good. Every single little thing isn't flaming either, it's more when it starts getting out of hand we're there and that's why I think people see it reasonable to do something about it when it reached the point of flaming but you disagree because you think that's too early based on your view on flaming.

Like I said in the post I later removed, I'd probably be a bad admin to most people but I'd be deleting posts, parts of posts or handing out warnings even at the slightest sight of baiting / trolling, because it has only one purpose and that purpose sucks. Not saying I don't do this myself, or even rarely, but I adapt to the environment. And with an environment that doesn't tolerate bullshit... No bullshit Happy "Freedom" and blablabla, the internet is huge and there are even forums called "UnMod". Don't have to talk about, or even have the right to talk about, everything everywhere all the damn time.

If there are any forums rules here some one should perhaps just add a couple of lines and just to be sure, not use any dodgy internet lingo that people clearly interpret differently. "Discussions that go out of hand or topic will have this and that effect, locking/splitting/deleting/nothing." Sometimes when stuff like that is proposed some people go "omygawd then i dont wana stay ;///" well bye, those people are only around for talking anyway and clearly not for playing the game which I kind of had the wacky impression this was all about.

I have been online since about hmm.. right after military service. Should be -94 or something, and been part of gaming communities since I started playing meridian 59 in umm... I suppose 95 or 96 or around there... Anyway, I guess I have been part of more relaxed communities than you if you have never seen good flaming or you think I am alone in my views on things. Truth said I never was part of many FPS commuties tho (I did play competitive Q1 quakeworld back in the day but the community for me and my clan back then resolved only around the servers). I guess the average age (NOTE: AVERAGE) is lower in FPS commuties than the ones I have been part of because most people I have known and shared communities with would not take flaming or insults from a person that doesnt know them personal. I don't really care if someone who doesnt know me, never met me thinks I am an idiot or whatnot. I will respond or retort, but I wouldnt loose any sleep over it. And with good flaming I dont mean good in the sense of it having a good purpose, but good in the sense of it beeing well written and it shows that it isnt just tossing out insults but actually having some thought and/or truth in it.

Anyway, I guess either this community needs to relax or I need to accept the fact that there are too many people taking things to serious in this community. I'll keep my flaming and insults (and insults you would have to search very long for in these forums to find) to those I know beforehand can handle it.

EDIT: Would like to add after have read the last paragraph in Torz's post more thoroughly that random flaming or personal insults that has nothing to do with the game is a totally different matter than what I am talking about, although this should have been obvious it might still have been misunderstood.

Oh, AND that if it is just about the game then stay out of the forums. If it is about the game AND the community, then whats wrong with not wanting to be part of a community that have totally different goals or morals than you have?

Well half of that just reconfirmed that everyone is talking about his own stuff and nobody is really getting exactly what the other guy means*. This is why we have to agree to disagree (if disagreeing is even what we're doing) Tongue

Slowly it creeps out that deeep dooown we think almost the same and that flame isn't good but can be done with style and more or less justified taking into consideration context, but still we're just arguing because we started like that and don't want to look like we changed our mind which we really didn't as much as explain better \Wave

Too much work with too little point, I'm out xD And the whine in here stays in here*, still <3 you and all the old posts Bo Thumbs down

* Mainly us not getting what you mean, or atleast meant in the beginning.
** Rena did point out a good thing about not locking; crap stays and piles up where it is instead of everyone bringing it up everywhere else if they can't make themselves heard in the original topic.

"whats wrong with not wanting to be part of a community that have totally different goals or morals than you have?" Oh I could make a massive reply on that alone but then we'd be fucking on for real Big grin Nobody would want it though and I honestly don't have time or will myself either x)

This dosent relate. I meant, insulting people irl, or at least, insulting real people, as in, either me insulting somone, or being insulted. This has never been "funny" for me, wether i am on the giving or recieving end. No matter how sophisticated and thoughtful said insults are.

You never called your best friend an old fart or similar? Or told your gaming buddy that he aims like an old grandma (or similar again, and that is an insult to either your gaming buddy or to all grandmas)? It is an insult even if it is meant friendly. I know it is not the same thing, but I just want people to realize that there are different levels of insults. Those that are really meant to hurt the reciever and those that are meant as a joke. And that there are several levels in between that can be quite funny if you yourself decide to only bother about what is funny about it and disregard what is meant to hurt you.
