After many years, I decided to fire up good old Quake 3 Arena on a dedicated retro laptop running Windows 7. I managed to track down and install the legendary Excessive Plus v1.03 (full version setup).
My goal is simple: I want to play offline / LAN skirmishes against bots using the physics and ruleset from "expert.cfg" or "plus.cfg" (I have both of these files fully working). Multiplayer mode works flawlessly, but it runs on some crappy modern configs, not the legendary ones from our golden era. I have my original files ready.
Unfortunately, when I try to launch a map via the in-game "Create Server" menu or the standard "Singleplayer" mode, the engine stubbornly loads the default, standard physics and completely ignores local server parameters for my custom configurations.
Has anyone here successfully managed to force custom E+ 1.03 physics configs (like expert or plus) specifically for local matches in Singleplayer / Create Server with bots? What is the correct command-line parameter (shortcut target) or server.cfg layout to make it work offline in this specific version of the mod? Because from what I can see, it feels like this engine version has some sort of block against local configuration overrides.
I've been struggling with this for a month, and Google's AI has completely run out of ideas. The file experiments I’ve done, gosh...
I also have a new laptop with Windows 11, and surprisingly Q3 works there too, including Multiplayer. But when it comes to what I'm trying to do locally, I keep hitting the exact same brick wall. The only difference is that on Win11, I am running Q3 on the ioquake3.86_64 installer.
Maybe there is some crazy old-schooler like me out there who suddenly missed the good old pure carnage, even just for a moment
