Iam trying to migrate to life with legal software. First step is change of OS. I hate microsoft and their windows. Reason why iam using it so long is, that on windows you can run more games:-) But now iam playing only one game - Q3e+ and its running under linux too. so i will try to migrate to ubuntu linux. Is here someone who have experience with this or similar migration? Will be my quake which iam actually run on my XP running in Ubuntu too?

You need to download the quake 1.32b point release for linux, install it and then just copy your baseq3 dir to linux and that's it, that´s the way i did it.
get it at:
[code:1]http://games.mirrors.tds.net/pub/planetquake3/linuxq3apoint-1.32b.x86.run[/code:1]

afaik u just need the pak0.pk3 file copied after u install the linux pointrelease. and enter ur cd key. (altho ofc copying ur baseq3 directory has the same effect).

For working sound you need to install jackd and joss, as the official Q3 is buggy in that regard. Joss might be in an Ubuntu repository which is not enabled by default. Use the following script to start Q3, edited depending on where you installed Q3:

#!/bin/bash
jackd -T --silent -d oss &
joss quake3/quake3

The -T option makes jackd quit after you quit Q3. Joss is specially made for getting sound to work with Q3.

You might run into trouble when trying to get Punkbuster working. Let us hear if you do. You do need to copy the pak0 file, as that is the major data file of the game.

Good luck!

PB is/was working fine on Linux just run pbsetup.exe from wine and update. Problem in my case was mouse interpolation and lower fps than in windows xp. But there have to be way of fixing this doggy mouse.

thinks for tips but actually i have biggest problem:-) I cant be online in linux Happy Because i cant change net speed from default 100mbps to 10. My stupid cable modem (motorola SURFboard) dont run on 100mbps LAN. Only on 10mbps.

I tried ethtool -s eth0 speed 10 but its dont changing speed because of some problems. Maybe it needs another drivers  But strange is, that my network card using Realtek and in win on default Realtek everything worked without problems

Usually a 100 mbit networkcard can connect fine with a 10 mbit modem. If you are sure there is an incompatibility between your modem and networkcard, then it could be due to different full- and half-duplex modes. Perhaps your modem only supports one mode, like 10mbit half-duplex.

But are you sure what the problem is? What errors do you get?

Maybe u didn’t use super user account ?.

sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 10 duplex full autoneg off

I used to have Motorola SURFBoard 4200 (about 5 years ago) modem and it was working fine with 100Mb/s speed. Seems to me that u have some weird integrated Lan card not fully supported by Linux os.

This problem is also great to post on Ubuntu forums to get more professional advice from Linux enthusiasts .

EDIT:
I read to quickly if you have Realtek based network adapter it should work fine. You may try also turning on half duplex (in command: duplex half) mode like Pannenkoek said, but I am not sure if it may help.
