QVM is JIT compiled. It's only advantage is cross-platform compatibility, it is not secure in any way. Beside this it has several disadvantages.
It has been discontinued in Quake 4 and also you won't find it in Quake Live.

Back to topic. I like the idea as it is optional.

btw a malicious pk3 will not be blocked by pure, because it is either present (played) on that pure server as well, or it had been downloaded and run earlier. Anyway pure does its work just after all player's pk3 were loaded and started (and possible damage inflicted)

Just deny writing files with dll/so extension in game root directory

I don't think a feature to disable alpha models is a good idea, we are not talking about a new feature/hack here, but about a long and established feature that has been around since a long time, and that is even available by default on Quake Live.

Also, you don't have to base opinions and develop features on the premise that it will make cheating harder. That is just obfuscation and it doesn't take care of the real problem, and as skull said there will always be ways to get around them. Anticheat features should be coded on the engine, not the game logic.

Unlike Q3A, Quake Live forcibly installs the Punkbuster (and imo it is under some extra remote control), so it may have any things enabled by default, but those things can be remotely disabled as well. If Excessive Plus will compete with ql for players, then it would have some sort of remote control too, not only to make troubles for cheaters but also to not let high level players dominate too much.

I suppose the latter statement will be negatively commented soon, but its just because the one does not know the state of things on the side servers, where admins experiment with configs. They really need a fence, which will isolate/downgrade those PROs who want play at full power with the beginners.

BTW, Quake live does sort players by their level

i rejoin .. now im banned because i use cl_maxpackets 125 > 30

i rejoin .. now im banned because i use rate 25000 > ...

i rejoin .. now im banned because i use xp_enemyColor xxxx != ""

I know, it's madness. I'm against it.

yea, ql has a very funny sort by level. was level 5 a while, just because i had 5 or 6 very good games. (5 or 6 of more than 200). (actually i am a level 3 player there in average).

I do understand that, but you can't achieve that just by disabling alpha models. You seem to think than just by disabling alpha skins an skilled player will play like a noob, which is not true. Blocking alpha skins will only affect reaction time a bit and NOTHING more, so a good player will always own noobs the same way regardless if alpha skins are enabled or not.

I know that it sucks when good players come to a server intended for low-skilled players and the server gets empty because of that, but imo this is NOT the solution for that. What will be next when disabling alpha skins fails? Blocking some other "advanced" features too, like some other player already stated in this thread?

just for example, when i go to megabox i mostly have xp_corpse 1 (or 3, no idea what value) so my enemys are actually grey on that server, doesnt matter a single bit

I know, that's what happens to me too.

No charge, in dll you can directly call functions like DeleteFile() or read/modify arbitrary files on whole user filesystem, install keylogger, allocate a lot of memory(causing DoS) etc. While in qvm you can't do it by design.

Q4 fails, QL just have another distribution model (encrypted media, no modifications, no custom servers + many "no" vs just few useful features) so no comparisons

Returning to topic,
no place for mod-side madness, the one proper solution is global rank (login-password) but it will kill any q3a mod for newbies because most of them even don't bother installing client for server mod they playing

Register,Click,Play -> win
Install,configure,play-> win
Install,configure,play,download,install,configure,register,... -> fail

Current solution: warn skilled player to not play on newbie servers, if they ignore - kick,  decrease their personal/clan rank, temporary ban
