crosshair white is actualy off-white <- like this

it should be white, <- like this, but it isn't

+ <-off-white

very hard to see the difference isnt it, now add to the fact that the q3 standard crosshair has shitty definition, this all adds up to giving it lower contrast, turn your gamma up and you start to loose more crosshair contrast.

some of the custom crosshairs have better definition, which also gives a brighter feel to them.

there are similiar effects going on with enemymodel colours too. i found that the brightest model i can find is bones set on 99999 which actualy appears to be pure white, is that something to do with alpha skins??? whatever they are Happy

there is no true white adn true black on monitors Winking it is all offwhite or very-dark-grey.

except if you use crt mow, there you have true white white and true black due to additional coloring effect.

true, and deeper still, speculation is that true white light does not exist at all, and of course black is non existent as it is the abscence of all light.

i think its relative on what color preset (sRgb, 6300K, 6500K, 9300K) you use or what achromatic contrast (contrast ratio) you have on the monitor lcd or crt.

Contrast ratio is the difference between the darkest black and the whitest white that the monitor can reproduce.

Not to mention about the Brightness of your monitor .. measured in cd/m² as more you have as brighter can be.. Also that means it can bring pain into your eyes after too much exposure if its too bright .. ~300-400 cd/m² should be ok.

I agree with you ppl when saying: there is no true white..

Considering that colors are excitations levels of our optical cells that our mind convert.. it results that white can have a maxiumum excitation point before damaging the optical cells, but that doesn't mean that an white wave can't have an enormous intensity, (which our mind perceives it as brightness) extendable beyond our human limits.. like in other physical contrasts : cold and hot (no maximum known), silence and maximum noise.
