for some reason or other my frame rate has dropped from a steady 125fps to a shaky 40-80fps and I can't figure out why. I've looked at all my settings (and drivers) in quake, with my video card, etc. and nothing has changed in those settings... I've tried making small adjustments to these settings with minimal success (maybe 10fps difference max). Someone, please help!

Same here: Drops to 30-40 fps and remains there for at max. 5 seconds. Then it's all fine again.

I had HUGE problems with that, but i found this command in a tweak guide.

r_swapInterval "1"

Controls vsync in Quake3 and defaults to 0 which is vsync off. Set to 1 to reduce tearing problems/drops in fps, you may lose FPS as it will be capped to monitor refresh rate.

worked for me

No dual core here and Im dont remmember it was happening in 1.02b.I also play uf and dont recall these problems ever happened there.

r_swapinterval 1 will enable vsync, plus it also must be enabled in gfx drivers to work, but that not the solution. It should work with it disabled.Plus when I was testing vsync enabled it made my shots lag a little, plus everything is much smoother and affects your sens.Dont forget if you cannot provide constant 125 fps but u use 120Hz your fps will brake in half if they wont be on 120.

Well I'm also experiencing huge packet loss lag spikes whenever the battle gets suddenly intense. BTW, my monitor max refresh rate is only 75hz. O_o it's also effecting every other game I play too. Does anyone else use PowerStrip to mildly overclock their video card?
