Hi all,

I know that this is an excessive plus board, but you guys seem a bit more clued up than the other quake forums i've been on so I'm asking this question here even though I'm currently only running an insta-unlagged server (I did have a go at excessive plus but I was getting all sorts of error messages about unknown commands etc... I promise to host excessive soon though Happy )

Anyway, I only have a meagre 600/128 connection and as far as I know this won't support more than about 3 or 4 players without getting laggy, but I just wondered if anyone else had tried hosting with this speed connection and what they set their sv_maxrate to for optimum ping times for players. I'm running it at 3000 at the moment but am not sure that this is the best number to have chosen.

Any tips?

thanks Big grin

Theoretical:
128 kBit/s = 16 kB/s = 16384 byte/s

sv_maxrate 3000:
16384 / 3000 = 5,46 players

Practical:
Because you never should calculate with the maximum and because of ADSL, reduce it at least by 2 players.
And because of railgun only gameplay, low rates should be playable as well.
My uprate is 256 kBit/s so running a server for testruns at sv_maxrate 3000-6000 and 4-6 players is ok.

Thanks Happy

I had a full server today for the first time and with me connected locally and 4 remote connections it seemed ok, ping times for everyone were around the 100 mark, which i think is acceptable

one strange thing i noticed though is that my ping time varies between 20 and 60. Everyone else connecting has to go through a cable modem, gateway computer and 2 packet switches, I am plugging straight through one switch with a 10M connection and my ping time is not that much better than the remote players (not that I'm complaining, i certainly don't suffer from lag) but I would expect a ping of around 6 with this setup, rather than nearer 60. Oddness...

hmm, experiment some with rate and cl_maxpackets
And see to it that you have fullduplex settings on your nic. If i'm not misstakning there is a cmd named force lan rate or some such.
