Okay, there is a wealth of information on this site, but it's very hard to track down.

I'm a newb in Australia. I've enjoyed some great QIII, QIII excessive (and even a couple of UT2004) on line games...but not many. Between our distance, and the time factor (let's face it, most of the world is so far behind Australia...time wise Big grin ) lag/ping is a real issue.

I've seen some (I'm guessing automated) messages during game play about reducing ping rate. A blink and they are gone...but something along the lines of "type ..../40"? Does this actually mean anything?

For me...I'm on a 512/128k plan. Not the best I'm sure, but many of us have a life outside Quake (gasp) and my wife and family would rip me a new one if I spent more money than that. Still, that should buy a good rate of game play for QIII I would have thought.

So, speaking on behalf of the frustrated Aussies, and frustrated newbies out there...please submit your short tips for reducing the lag and improving game play. Let's face it, you need blokes like me to provide your stats...."FRAIGBAIT".

as you are in australia, your ping is gonna be 250+ anyways...and most servers are european, so ya need a damn better connection than that Happy

imo you should PM term, he is an australian player and im sure he's willing to help you with your cfg.

in this thread many people will tell you to type things, but that is for THEIR config and THEIR isp, not to mention THEIR location in the world Happy

cl_maxpackets 40
cl_packetdup 1
snaps 40
rate 25000
or try an lower rate

also if you have a lot of packet loss, try

cl_packetdup 2

even more if your connection can handle it.

i have been using wifi, with an average packet loss of 60%, but with cl_packetdup 3 it ended a manageable 10-20%

if, on the other hand, you have a stable, no loss connection, try cl_packetdup 0. it will allow you to set a higher rate.

I am proud of spreading a pirated Excessive Plus version and claim to be the original author, yay!
