lagometer vs scoreboard display

Hi all.

Sorry if there is an answer to this somewhere, I've only read the FAQ and some threads.

So I'm having this little problem. When playing online I'm not experiencing any lags, I can aim perfectly with the railgun, no problems whatsoever. The lagometer also looks ok, low steady ping, no packet loss (a single red bar every minute or so). BUT the scoreboard shows something different - a bit higher ping and consistent packet loss going even up to 30%.

To get rid of the packet loss I've tried changing snaps, maxfps, maxpackets, graphics settings - no changes make a difference.

So my questions:

What is the differenece between the lagometer and the scoreboard display/why the differences in packet loss? Should I even worry about it? (I can aim properly)

Could it be something not connected with the connection but with my computer (old rig athlon xp 2600+, 1024ram, geforce 7600gs, win xp sp2)?

Obviously, what should I do to lower packet loss displayed in the scoreboard?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Re: lagometer vs scoreboard display

have you tried to close your winamp, internet browser, antivirus and anything else when you start quake 3??

can you tell us where you experience these problems and what values do you use for snaps / cl_maxpackets / com_maxfps / cl_timenudge ?

you've tried on other servers and the loss its the same ?

your PC specifications are ok.

i'm guessing that you have programs that still run in background ... for example i have winamp and if i turn on his plugins ( i have alots Big grin) then i experience loss just as you say.. but anyway i could also be wrong.

Yep, of course, only necessary stuff like firewall, mouse software is
running, no fireworks there.

40/125/125/0

Tried altering all of these, no significant changes. Surprisingly, when I
changed maxpackets to 60 the loss was even higher.

Not exactly the same but it's always there. Whenever I move it goes up, it
never stays at 0% for longer than a couple of seconds.

greetings!
I had the same problem and I was considering changing my isp, I changed 3 ethernet controllers, all cables, called my isp multiple times and tried practically everything...... however I managed to get rid of this annoyance when tavoo sent me a program called: "cFosSpeed Traffic Shaping", you can find it on torrent, it takes a minute to install....when you installed it it shows you a small blue bar/cloud on bottom right side of your screen, right click on it and menu appears, then click on "send calibration pulse", and then go on "disable traffic shaping" and your problem should be solved....

btw I disable firewall both zonealarm and windows while I'm playing because it causes a 3% packet loss, and I do that for almost two years now and I never got a virus or something like that
hope this helps you! Happy

Thanks for the advice!

I tried the software, unfortunately it did not work so well. I previously also checked a similar program called TCP Optimizer and both seem to be incompatible with my ISP. While the download speed is improved, the ping stays the same and what's more when downloading at maximum speed (e.g. in a speed test) the transfer stops abruptly. Might be some limitation by the ISP, I dunno.

I've just tried Quake Live and noticed there is no packet loss display there other than the lagometer (at least at first glance). Which brings me back to my first question: there is no packet loss on my lagometer in q3. So does this mean that my connection is actually ok? Why does the scoreboard display show packet loss while the lagometer shows the connection is entirely stable?

Re: lagometer vs scoreboard display

I finally figured it out. Phew!

it turns out epsislow was right after all. The process that was causing the problem was the NVIDIA video driver. It was probably the control panel component but who knows, the control panel is automatically installed anyway even if you install the driver from windows itself and cannot be turned off AFAIK.

I went to NVIDIA's website and downloaded the oldest driver they had (from 3 years ago or so) and voila now I have 0% packet loss most of the time and it never goes up higher than 6%. (it used to go up to 20-30%).

So my advice is: don't upgrade your NVIDIA drivers or look for some tweaked editions because this is ridiculous.

Thanks for all the advice guys!
