ioquake 1.36/e+ 2.3 - all servers complain I need to install E+ 2.3 (or 2.2b)

Hi !
Wanted to play a little again after 12-15 years Winking Now running an iMac with osx and ioquake. Tried to get e+ running and installed as per instructions. I can not connect to any servers, message is "Please install v2.3 to play on this Server" (i get the same message for 2.2b as well.
I tried re-install with nothing more than pak0-8 in baseq3 and excessiveplus. Same problem.
I've searched but have not found anything similar so I am lost. Any kind soul that has this running on a mac ?
(ioquake works fine on other servers and I have played a couple of times)
