Hi all Happy Can anyone who live in France (or someone else who owns the information) tell me about taxes for cars? The question is: imagine - someone comes from Russia to France and buy a car (example - Toyota RAV4). Not for taking it to Russia, but to drive it only in France. What's the price/tax/terms etc it will be? Take a part please, I need this information so much. Thank you Happy

Hello!
If you buy a car in France, you have to make a "carte grise" (litteraly grey card), at the prefecture, to report the purchase of your car and to be allowed to drive it (it proves you own the car), and a "plaque d'immatriculation" (license plate for your car). If the prices aren't including all taxes, you have to add the T.V.A. (V.A.T.) (x1.196), but normally every prices including all taxes. There is various other taxes: on fuel, VAT on insurance, registration fees, royalties paid by road users and road tolls. You have to pass the technical control and the pollution control too every 5 years (~50€).
According to the price and the power of your car, your car has a "puissance fiscale" (litteraly horse tax, fiscal power), which does the price of your "carte grise" (the prices begins at 300€, something like that, for an old bad car for example).

No-no, the question is exactly about buying, not taking for rent. Thank you very much for information, D3l1gh7. One more moment: is it depends on region or prices/taxes are the same for the whole country?

I'm affraid it's impossible if you dont live in France or if it's not for export. On every car papers your address is written, so you absolutly have to have one, (it might work with a friend's address but it will be more administrative requests, and believe me the less you have to do the better it is for you. It's already annoying and long for a french so I can't imagine for a russian, so few people speak english here even less russian).

You also might have a problem with insurance, dunno if a russian's insurance is available in France, if not then you also need an address for it.

If you have an adress here, then between 150 and 400 euros for registration certificate, MOT is 70 euros, license plate 20 euros, insurance depends on car and if you want full or part insurance I would say from 200 euros to 1000 per year.

Honestly it's gonna be a pain in the ass for you to get all administrative papers needed. I doubt it's worth it if you have planned to come less than 3 months. If I were you I would go for a rental car.

Only the price of your grey card depends of your region (it depends of your prefecture), other taxes are the same in the whole country.

Thanks a lot, the picture is coming clear.

Well, it's ok about adress and now I beg you again: can you please help giving advice about what's gonna be a better choice? I mean car model from the side of what taxes and fees will be the most advantageous? Here's several models:

Toyota RAV4

Lexus hybrid (RX350h or RX400h)

Audi Q5

BMW X3

VW Touareg

So, is there anything between them what's the most popular/cost-saving/consumes little fuel etc? And yes, we have to choose only between SUV class models (Sport Utility Vehicle). I'll be thankful for any useful comments/information.

Nana, you kicked my ass so many times on ERA DM17, please help)

Also I'll be thankful till the coffin, if someone will consider concrete example and calculate the prices/taxes from car dealership to the garage of the customer. Please, it's really important.

Hi!
Lexus RX450H : 1st place for consumption - [56200€;78100€] - [0€;200€] Tax on pollution.
BMW X3 : 2nd place for consumption - [44000€;54500€] - 200€ Tax on pollution.
Toyota RAV4 : 3rd place for consumption - [25700€;33600€] - 200€ Tax on pollution.
VW Touareg is over for consumption. You'll pay more for tax on pollution.

I can't give you the prices for the grey cards and for insurance, it depends of your situation.
