For nubs and it disturbs gameplay, but I use it depending on my vision's condition, once blurry and irritated, I have to do so that is if I want to see the enemy and what goes on up ahead..

never used it during the game, for me its to long to zoom-accurate-shot, i accurate-shot Big grin
only if my weapons could change a bit faster... now its like more than a second to change weapons Confused

I don't use zoom because it makes another action to do before shooting and it doesn't make me practice aiming / practice my field of vision (aiming on high field of vision).
Though, I won't say zoom is for noobs due to the fact best players of the world in Quake are using it.
For example, Strenx has cg_zoomfov 55 as usual, but he has a cg_zoomfov value for each weapon too ... weird config'.

Zoom is for noobs, that's why ever quake LAN winner ever uses it. Feel free to check yourselves people Big grin List of LAN tournamentsList of configs(other tournaments going mabck to 2003 available on same FTP)

Oh and while traversing the lands of competitive 2v2 lolCA, I've found out an alternative use for zoom:

You add a value of about 10-20 to your fov, and make that your zoomfov. Then you only use it with lg and it minorly helps with tracking due to changed angle of vision.
