tried hd 558, 598, nothing special, no big excitement, i loved the clarity, and non-bassiness, or my ears got too much metal music, prolly braindead soon, i just don't hear the things they write in reviews in forums about these headphones. Sounds better with gaming s-card for sure. Thinking about downgrading to SS 9h, 598 too much money, not worth it

I would teach you how to play, but I don't know myself!

Anyway, this is not a waste of money, because you'll be good surprised by the surround sound in games like Diablo 3, CSS/CSGO, Battlefield 3 (even the 2), Farcry 3, ...
Listening to music with the ones I'm using is also a good pleasure.

As Superbad and TanaKa said... first try to optimize the sound settings for your Windows system because, also in my opinion, it is not possible to set up 5.1 or 7.1 sound for Q3.
I also use a 5.1 Headphone (http://www.roccat.org/Products/Gaming-Sound/ROCCAT-Kave-5-1/) with a 7.1 HD sound card and I have just adjusted the Q3 q3config sound set up as follows:
