Well....Maybe because Reno said it like it is "anyway life would be boring if everyone was nice" and you misunderstood it, comparing game itself to real life.

Game is just a part of the whole "package" because people talk inside the game too (and NOT only about the game) and communicate with others, making friends/enemies, exchanging contacts - phone/instant messengers, long hours chatting - not only playing (dunno about U), talking on forums, arranging meetings in person, talking about real life subjects and so on...

Game is fiction, but it's also a tool like any other place on the internet where U can meet other people - that's why U play online and not on skirmish or single player.
Try not to be narrow minded and say that it can't be compared to real life, when it, clearly, can be.
