Veteran Reporting for Duty
Hello everyone!
Recently I decided to start playing Quake III E+ again after a break that lasted about 4 - 6 years. I see a lot has changed since then, which is also the reason I'm creating this thread. You see, back when I played, I believe it was still version 1.03 I used to be really into all this server administration, modding, you know, all that jazz. But now, after this long time, my memory seems to fail me.
The problem is, my server isn't appearing in the server browser, even though people can connect to it from the console. Even when favorited it says the destination is "unreachable". However, it seems like this is dynamic meaning that sometimes it appears in the browser, other times it doesn't. I've had a few random players joining, so obviously someone is able to see it sometimes.
While that isn't really a problem, even though it could be nice a little publicity, I've other concerns too. My friends, which I play with, seems to have a very variable amount of ping/packet loss, even though we all live in the same country, and some of us even live almost next door.
I've all the ports forwarded, I've tried hosting it on different PCs but nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have clue? Or is there some complete guide to setting up a nice server that runs perfectly?
Thanks in advance,
TOCS

: Shout out. Did you see that ghost?
: Thx for the replies, epsi and easy.
: Suggestion? Do nothing. Btw. it feels like a deja vu for me... Like it's already happened before that someone posted something about this problem and someone answered exactly the same thing as I did. Am I gone crazy or that really happened before?
: Nice call, so what do you propose then... Any suggestions anyone?
: Guys don't pay too much attention to the QL forums: devs don't read it and all deathmatch community news and discussions go through esreality anyway, all you will see on QL forums are tier 2 public heroes and not a lot of relevant material to anything.
: exactely khaz
: hella welcome back
: Damn, it has been a hella long time since I've logged in here.

Hi man. About the variable ping, maybe it would be worthrwile to start from a thorough look at your net? Maybe you have some crappy router on the way? Try traceroute or mtr, nc, ping, with different packets sizes, ports, protocols and speeds, and some packed sniffer/analyser at the server side. Look at arp table of your server, if your comp waits for arp of the gate too long, maybe try to set it manually. Check if you have some QoS turned on your router or server, what does it do, how your NAT is configured (forwarded ports, right?) - just few thoughts...
