I decided a few weeks back to change to Linux on my server computer.

I got it up and running and I managed to get mailserver and ftp server running. SO I figured I'd get my Q3 servers up too. It wont work...

Could someone who has a Linux server running please help me with this? I used to have 2 or 3 servers up most of the time on win2k but now I cant anymore Sad

I would like a step-by-step setup..

This is the step-by-step I done that don't work

1. Copy all my .pk3 files from my gamecomputer with winXP Pro (the ones in baseq3) to a folder on my linuxbox.

2. Download the linux installer to that folder. (Note that this time I didnt create a root folder and a baseq3 folder. Only a single folder with the baseq files)

3. run the installer with ./linuxq3a- blabla. This works fine, it creates another folder somewhere else, dont remember the path with a lot of files, q3ded and quake3 and so on and a baseq3 folder with pak1.pk3 to pak6 or 7. Not the pak0.pk3.

4. Try to run the server with ./q3ded blablabla.

5. Get error message "failed to load default.cfg"

I got it to load default.cfg before I reinstalled my linux OS on a new larger HDD but than it said "Failed to load autoexec.cfg" instead.

I am running RedHat 9

Linux aint a pain in the ass, windows is. It doenst have a console. now adays I am allmost never starting my graphical interface and still I can do everything I like (watch images, videos and sites and listen to music, Yes in the console 1024x768@75 16bit). Now who can do that in dos? Also I have never had more control over everything I do.

--edit-- I am running gentoo, installed it without any manual --edit--

OK, let me re-phrase that statement...

LINUX is a pain in the ass for those who dont know how to use it.

I use both Linux & XP Pro...and I find it funny that you can use KNOPPIX Linux to save windows XP from crashing...LOL

Give it a try sometime... Winking

If correctly configured it is faster on most fronts and most important Way more secure. (www.adamantix.org == xtreme safe almost no buffer overflows possible etc due special security progs. Gentoo == xtreme fast, it compiles everything from scratch so it is super optimized to your system. And debian for something in between (for normal servers I reccomend Debian, gentoo or adamantix are only for if you know what you are doing. And distro's like redhat (fedora to), suse, mandrake and lindash realy suck).

Free yourself use Linux.

Bah, If you wanna start using Linux. Don't listen to those guys racking down on the easy to use versions..

I know NOTHING of Linux, and I am not used to working in a console. So if you are just starting (like me), why not use something that I can actually get running and THEN start playing around and using it meanwhile?

I mean, I need to be able to surf and stuff, I dont have a comp to spare while I am reading and learning about how to set up some non graphical UI and maybe get it running. I rather install RedHat, which took me no time at all, and be able to use the machine while I am learning. If I get so comfortable with Linux and the console that its worth to reinstall to get a more stable and optimized OS then fine.. But for now? noway am I going to have a system that doesnt run because most linux hardasses says RedHat sux, I think it sux more to have a comp I dunno how to use..

And RedHat 9 is EOL, cost nothing.

--edit -- I am using RedHat 9, Installed it with no manual... so? .-- Happy --edit--

--edit -- edit -- Erm, actually gen.X.Unpl4y3r was my manual... --edit-- --edit--

You dont have to pay for RedHat only for the support, as for most distros.
