if you have an ati gfx card, try installing ati tray tools(if you haven’t already) it will give you a system and gfx card temperature.
its not a solution as such but it may point you in the right direction.

On average you should have a system and card temp of about 50 - 60 (this is only a guideline)

Its a virus... i already have one of this babys on my pc

Backup.

Delete partitions

Create 2 partitions

Install windows on c:\

Restore ur backup in D:\

If u ever have again that problem u will not loose ur good files couse virus only gets root drives in this case C:\

If the shit keeps doing replace Power Suply

Hope this solves ur problem

- my speech....the easiest way to foreclose system trouble:))

anything else is only about your experiences - cleaning cpu cooler, power supply, default settings in bios in other case plug off battery from motherboard (cold bios restart), remember latest actions u made before it stopped work correctly, and of course if everything is plugged in correctly- it happens sometimes (how unbelievable:))

memtest86 (test runs in boot-time, just switching into protected mode)
it goes thru cycles (every cycle has several steps like moving random pattern on random places anywhere in memory range) one cycle takes on p4 3ghz about 15 minutes
you can let it run unlimited count of cycles (one or two cycles are enough usually)
point of this test is really test memory under heavy long load (ecc is another coffee Smug)
you cant find all hw errors via short test
