Well I have about half the parts needed for a new machine and my question is what is the bare minimum needed to run a moderate server of say 12-15 players so far the parts are.

msi k7-420 pro nforce 2 board

Currently with the amd xp 2100 cpu it came with gaurenteed to run @ 2.24 overclocked, but I may just get the fastest cpu This board supports which I believe is a XP-2600 "dont quote me".

I have 1 gig of pc2100 ddr on the way from ebay and one free slot left after that.

Onboard sound, video, and lan. Though I'll probably throw in the old geeforce 4 to free up ram till I get around to getting something better.

Going to run on debian or another linux distribution on it "I hate service packs" Tongue.

Now my actual questions are this does a higher rpm hard drive really matter for a game as old as Q3. "I know it would'nt hurt" But would the difference be that major??

The second is bandwidth, I just tested mine and the results were strange.
they were 4mbs down but only 512k up which I actually subscribed for 4 down 2 up. I tested this @ several sites with the same result. Im thinking possibly it may be that the rustbucket I currently run can only do 512k up as it a old machine and operating system. but would even 2 mbs up be enough for what Im attempting to run?

Just for informations sake I was not planning on playing on the same machine the server would be running on as I know that can bog things down also.

Well any info you can give me regarding this would be greatly apprecited and thanks in advance Big grin .

For 12 - 15 people i think u need 1.28mbits(UP i think) of bandwidth. Than all u need is at least 512megs of RAM 2 run it and play on the same pc

Thanks Hellfire well hopefully when I get the thing put together the weekend after Labor Day. I'll run another bandwidth test on it and see if the newer hardware and Os causes any improvement> If not its time to call up my isp and ask them why I get the full 4mbs download speed but only around 1/4 the 2 mbs upload speed I pay for.

And also currently looking at an auction for a 36 gb 10000 rpm scsi fiberwire drive with adapters etc. for 18 bucks U.S. Thats just the right size for a small Linux distrubition , Quake 3 and a few other files. I'll just slap 2 Ide drives in it for for Windows and storage. That way I get the best of both worlds 1 fast drive, then 2 bulk drives for storage.

Any way thanks again for the reply and I really hope the upload speed is Just current hardware and Os limitations. As They really won't like me when I call them on it "no one likes to get screwed over" Evil

I know hellfire but as I said before in the "What type of system do you play on ? post ". It's just time to retire my current rust bucket to web surfing detail. Was just trying to get a idea as to what bandwidth I'd need for what I described. If I'm allready forking out the money for 2 mbs upload speed anyway I ought as well put it to good use and get what I'm paying for.

And besides I wanna be able to play quake 4 once it hits the shelves soon hopefully 2.24ghz and 1 gig of ram will be good enough to get 40 fps Laughing.

The more things change the more they stay the same "sigh" .
